Nonbreaking spaces

Why does Word add Nonbreaking spaces? I get thousands of them.

It doesn't add non-breaking spaces automatically. It may display spaces as
dots if you have your view options set to do this.

Is your show/hide button on your standard toolbar turned on? It' looks like
a paragraph symbol. if it's turned on then it's allowing you to see all
non-printing characters like spaces between words that look like little
periods; tabs, paragraph symbols and hidden text. If you just shut that
button off, all those marks go away. Check to see if that is what you see
because Word doesn't automatically add Nonbreaking spaces to your document.
Nonbreaking spaces look like little cirles between words. So if it's little
dots (or periods) between your words, then it's just pressing your show/hide
button on or off.
