Using XP Pro, SP2 and recently replaced my old unserviceable cd rom with a
new one (LITE-ON CD-ROM LTN-529s). Under Device Manager I have a exclamation
symbol and properties tells me that no drivers are loaded! I have
uninstalled and re-installed and I still get the same message. No driver
disk came with the cd unit. Where to now? Any help appreciated, thanks.

Right click on the CD ROM, choose Update Driver and follow the prompts.

You can attempt to find the driver via the website.

If this won't work, go to the manufacturer's website and download a driver
from there or email their support people and ask for one.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
[Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter]

2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need
to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

My problem is this happens regularly when I *haven't* removed Easy CD
Creator.

To resolve it, I delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry
values, reboot, and do a repair install of Easy CD Creator - but the
problem reappears in a few hours, days, or weeks, (apparently randomly)
and I haven't been able to figure out what triggers it.
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
[Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter]

2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration
information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged.
To fix this problem you can first try running a troubleshooting wizard. If
that does not work, you should uninstall and then reinstall the hardware
device. (Code 19)

Recommended Resolution

A registry problem was detected.
This can occur when more than one service is defined for a device, if there
is a failure opening the service subkey, or if the driver name cannot be
obtained from the service subkey. Try these options:
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the
troubleshooting wizard.
Click Uninstall, and then click Scan for hardware changes to load a usable
driver.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then select Last Known Good
Configuration, which rolls back to the most recent successful registry
configuration.
As a last resort, you can edit the registry directly. For more information,
see the Registry Reference in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit
at http://www.microsoft.com/reskit.

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Recommended Resolution

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file
that is corrupt; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry
point in another binary file that could not be loaded.
Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall
or upgrade the driver.
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the
troubleshooting wizard.

Thanks everyone. I have restored the system back to a date some two weeks
ago and am now in working condition again.

Yes, I do have a Error Code39. Followed thru your instructions but was NOT
able to locate the "LowerFilters".
I located the UpperFilters in the reg entry referring to the cd/dvd rom and
deleted but I also note that UpperFilters appeared for other devices as
well. Should all these UpperFilters be deleted?

Only for the CD devices. To tidy up safely, get a registry patch file,
cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click
on it and merge it into the registry and reboot

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you use.

Aside from drivers that come as part of such burning software and are
installed with it, you should *not* try to install drivers for CD/DVD
drives in XP, and certainly not for a Lite-On one
