non recognition of blank cd

When asked to insert a blank cd into cd drive the system fails to recognise
that one has been inserted. This occurs regardless of the type of cd. I can
get my Nero to recognise any blank cd. Why has this suddenly happened. I
tried a different cd rom (a new Sony) but it still fails to recognise one and
continues to ask'please insert disc'.
Help please!

XP's CD writing/manipulation techniques are, at best, rudimentary. Use Nero.

Then use what works. IE Nero.
