Non-Genuine Activation Key

I have recently purchased a second hand laptop with Win XP Pro pre-installed
(with SP2). When I try to upgrade to IE7 I get the "non-genuine" message
appear. I have the original disk & it's product key, but it appears the
previous owner used a leaked key. I have tried to change using the msoobe.exe
(as advised in many articles in the knowledge base) but this says each time
it's an invalid key. Is there another way of changing this key?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for
users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key
to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall!
