Blimy, had a non-genuine vlk install worked fine for years. Decided I'd
become legal hence has have a valid Pro key shouldn't have been a problem
heh? Forget it, nothing would allow me to change the key and activate etc.
etc. Instead, decided Ok time for complete clean reinstall anyway after all
these years. Boy has that been a mistake, nothing but bsod's since and no
clear sign of why as I foolishly installed a lot of stuff quick.

But I do have an image of install in very early stage.

So what I'm wondering is what does a person have to backup and restore to
keep "validation etc." ok without having to resort to redoing it everytime
which surely will eventually lead to having to make phone call and all that
gibberish from someone can hardly understand?

You can do a complete hard drive "cloned" image.

I've got three of them as the clean install progressed. I'll likely revert
back to each in turn depending on what "it's" problems may be. Reason I was
asking is because I can see just starting all over again from square one
with a new clean install paying specific attention to order of drivers
installed etc. (e.g. motherboard drivers first etc.) and would rather not
have any bs with MS and phone calls demanding long character strings etc. if
it can be avoided.

Sites indicate it's not much except save and restore the "wpa.*" files in
system32 as the pc's hardware isn't going to change enough to matter (I
think :) given same nic, motherboard etc.

The WPA file thing is not reliable. It's failed for me in the past.
