I have a Gateway Desktop that came pre-installed with
Windows XP Home Edition - things were fine until I
installed a spyware deletion program called Adaware which
I allowed (because of my own stupidity) to alter my
registry. Almost immediately I had a very sluggish
computer with no internet or email capabilities - I
couldn't even move icons on my desktop so that I could
make a backup copy - Also Norton Anti-virus went hay-wire
and would not shut down. So, I decided to attempt a non-
destructive recovery of the system. I tried to boot from
the system disk, but was curtailed when I had to enter
the Administrator's Password which is blank by default
from Gateway. I have since found documents explaining
this problem. I was finally able to run the recovery
disk from my sluggish desktop. I got all the way through
the recovery until the finalization stage when I got some
error messages listing various .dll files and that the
recovery could not continue. I have read documents
specific to Hewlett-Packard and Compaq Presarios that
require a patch prior to recovery because the
installation of the registry items are mismatched with
what's on the computer and the latest updates. Dynamic
update is no good since I have no internet access....
Please advise me as to what I should do from here.....
Is there a fix (file download) specific to this issue? I
have not found one in the knowledge base...... At this
point I can not even get back to my desktop. I am even
considering a new install and forgetting about the
countless valuable files on my harddrive, but each time I
begin this process, I get an alert telling me that I
should choose a non-destructive upgrade which gives me
hope that the files are still salvageable.....
Thanks!
