Nokia 6610 - IrDA connectivity grief

Hi,

According to all the documentation and NG postings, XP-Pro on my laptop
should recognise my Nokia 6610 mobile phone over the Infra-red link and
install it as - "Standard Modem over IR link". It doesn't seem to do
this. The only modem I've got listed in Control Panel/Phone and Modem
options is the onboard 56K modem.

I place the phone within an inch of the IR port and put the phone in IR
reception mode. After a few seconds an icon appears in the system tray
that says "Nokia 6610 is within range", but this only lasts a few
seconds before it disappears again.

There's a Nokia 6610.inf file on the Nokia site that I've downloaded,
but in order to install that I first need XP to recognise it as a
Standard Modem over IR link, but it won't even do that.

In case its important, I'm running XP-Pro SP1, fully patched and the
Nokia firmware version is 4.74.

Any tips?

After updating from IBM T21 to Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D 1840W (from WIN 2000 to XP) I'm now facing samekind of connectivity problem. My phone is Nokia 6310i and it was very easy to install it to T21, now when trying to install it to the new machine the installation can not even create a stabile connection to phone over the IR link. The connection comes and goes very irregularly and does not stay on more than few seconds at the time. Please advice!

OK, so maybe this is dependent on Laptop hardware. Mine is a Mitac 7321
(its actually an Atec something else, but that in turn is the Mitac)
