Noisy fan with win2k

Hi!

I have used winxp, linux and win2k on my computer. It is only with win2k the
fan is very noisy all the time. The fan goes up to the highest sound and
stays there. When the fan goes up on highest in winxp and linux it goes down
after a while when the computer have lesser to do. Anyone knows why and what
I can do about it without changing operating system.

Which fan? cpu/vid/case?
It may indicate that a process is running and as such some hw requires extra
cooling
Check running proccesses

Do you install any utilities that came with your motherboard for
hardware monitoring, or any crap like that? And importantly, What is
the model of your motherboard?

What utilities can cause my fan problem? What can be the problem eith the
motherboard?

The only ones to be concerned with is if there were hardware monitoring
stuff. I Don't think the Motherboard is broke.

Can I do something through win2k or bios user interface?

THe only way to know is to check. All BIOS are different. You might
have an option to change fan speeds, though usually you don't. It may
be one of those things you have to put up with. Frankly I'd be more
concerned if the fans STOPPED spinning under win2k.

Reading this thread up through a few minutes ago, it seems to me that
you're not going to find a W2k-related or BIOS-related fix.
I suggest 2 things:
- Think about what applics you run on W2k but not on XP/Linux. Some
app may be extremely demanding.
- No fan should ever be loud enough to annoy. Think about replacing
the device. Fans are very cheap, and very easy to replace.

And of course you're absolutely positive this noise is from a fan...not,
for example, from a thrashing hard drive?

I also find that the gnashing of my teeth when running Linux/XP covers up a
lot of noise from the computer. So when he boots 2k he isn't grinding
his teeth and he just notices the computer noise more.

Could be, I guess. It's just that Daffodil launched this thread with the
assertion that his fan was making noise, and a large segment of the
public accepted that, as large segments of the public always do, without
a murmur. I'm just a small segment of the public, so I don't have to
take as much for granted.

I understand an aversion to Loonix, but EcchsP has its place, as far as
I'm concerned. My infant grandson, for example, loves the pretty Fisher
Price desktop.

I noticed that, DL.
Nasturtium apparently was wrapped up in some preconceived notion.
Subsequent posts confirmed that.
My Daffodil post was just amusement - not at all serious.
Doesn't seem much point in taking Tulip seriously when evidence suggests
he/she's not really listening.
the first response suggested that a proccess might be running, but it was
not replied to
