Hi,

For a month now, I have no windows sounds in my main XP
Pro User. Other users are ok. I can play sounds through
Control Panel but none (ie Recycle) take place when
appropriate. All other programs, MS Money etc, are fine.

I have just received a new XP Pro disk from Microsoft
(mine had too many missing files) and have re-installed
over the current installation. (I do not at this stage
wish to do a fresh install via CD-rom with reformatting
of drive which I know is the best way to start afresh)
I guess this has retained the existing sound setting?

Any ideas?

If you are comfortable with editing the registry, Start>Run>Regedit. Navigate
to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, if the Data column for "Default" is blank, right-click
and delete the key, XP will immediately rebuild it with the correct value
"Value not set" and your sounds should return.

John,

Excellent, that was easy, Ive struggled with this for weeks. I did post
about 6 weeks ago but no one replied.

Any idea why this happened, is it a common problem?

Thanks.

You're most welcome. Several install programs seem to blank that key. No one
has come up with a coherent reason. Nero 5 did it and I went round and round
with them without ever getting a straight answer.
