No way, no how?

I had a fairly fresh install of XP home SP2 and made one successful capture
from VHS of a 95-minute movie, then the very next time I tried to use WMM
(next day, no changes to computer during interval) the program would freeze
during the part where you select the video setting. Not only would WMM
freeze but the computer could not be shut down except by force.

I tried so many suggestions to solve the problem, including uninstalling
Norton AntiVirus (what a pain to get rid of!!!) and all other media apps,
too long of a story to go into. Finally my last resort was to start fresh,
so I've just reformatted C: and reinstalled XP. The only other software I've
installed aside from all of the Windows updates are: Zone Alarm, MSN
Messenger, Winpatrol, and device drivers.

Then I tested Windows Movie Maker. The result was the same as before! It
freezes at the Video Setting window after clicking "Capture Video" in the
left side navigation area, and the computer cannot be shut down normally
after that.

I found a website with a lot of info on using WMM and it says there are
"known Issues" between WMM and my video card, then points to an article on
the microsoft site.

Quoting from that article: "Video may not be previewed or captured
successfully using the Video Capture Wizard in Windows Movie Maker 2 if an
NVIDIA video card is installed on your computer. If you encounter this
issue, install the latest NVIDIA device driver software for Microsoft
Windows XP through the Windows Update Web site. After updated drivers have
been installed, try capturing video again using the Video Capture Wizard in
Windows Movie Maker 2."

Well, I had already gotten all the Windows updates for my computer, and none
of them were specifically listed as drivers for the video card. Oddly, right
after Windows was installed, before installing ANY special video driver, the
display was as good as if I had installed video card drivers.

The first WMM test I did was after installing all the Windows updates but
before installing NVIDIA drivers. Then I tried again after installing the
latest drivers from NVIDIA. The result was identical.

Should I give up on using WMM 2? I liked it the one time it did work for me.
The movie came out just perfect.

Before giving up and reformatting etc. I tried installing VideoWave 5 to see
if it would work. I used it on my old computer with no problems at all, but
on this machine it froze just like WMM did, except it happened just after
starting the capture.

I also tried Power Director 4 also on the previous installation but it would
not even OPEN for me.

In case anyone would like to try and help me, here are some of the specs of
my machine:

AMD Athlon 3000+
1GB PC3200/400Mhz RAM
400W PSU
250GB Seagate HD, 97% unused

I'm not seeing in your post the device you're using to do your analog
capture.... you need one, such as those in the Analog Video Capture
section of my website.

It's a Plextor ConvertX PX-N100U.

I may have found a solution from your website - there's a suggestion to
disable hardware acceleration. I did that and made another test, and it
works - sort of... There is a small line at the bottom of the test clip. But
it's better than nothing.

I'm wondering if I advance the HW accel. one segment at a time until it get
it to the max where it still works, it might eliminate that line....

Also, what other effects will disabling HW accel. have on the way things
work? Should I reserve reducting HW accel. for when I am going to use WMM
and leave it at Full the rest of the time?

I posted some of this message on the forum as well.

In cases where reducing the Graphics Hardware
Acceleration makes an improvement...it's a strong
indication that your video driver is corrupt or outdated.
Check the website of your Video Adapter's mfg.
for an updated driver.

The driver I have is the latest one from the mfr's website. It's dated Dec.
10, 2005 and I just downloaded and installed it fresh yesterday!

Ok...you apparently have other problems.
Did you uninstall your current driver before
installing the updated one? Who knows...
maybe an earlier driver would work. Or
that may not even be the problem.

It may not make any difference, but the nVidia
site shows Ver: 81.98 release date 12, 21, 05.

Mine is the same version #, I don't know about the date discrepancy.

There was nothing to uninstall. My first post in this thread explains what
happened.
