No volumn control button on notification line

When I click the button in sounds and audio devices in
control panel to put a volumn button on the task bar, it
says I have no volumn control program installed. It says
to go to add/remove programs and install the program.
There is no such program in add/ remove. What can I do?

You may want to check out the "Add/Remove Windows Components" section of Add/Remove Programs; be sure to have your WinXP CD handy.
