Volumn icon in XP sp 3

Installed Service Pack 3 for Windows XP yesterday with no problems. This
morning the volumn icon is missing from the taskbar. I went to Control Panel
and the Taskbar setup, the box is still checked to "Place volumn icon on
taskbar", but no icon.
How can I get the volumn icon back on the taskbar?

First - make sure it is not just hidden. Do you see a small "<" near where
the icon should be?

If that checks out (it is not hidden) - do the following:

Control panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices --> Volume tab --> Uncheck "Place
volume icon in the taskbar" --> Click Apply --> Check "Place volume icon in
the taskbar" --> Click Apply --> Click OK

Worst case - download the latest hardware driver from the individual
hardware manufacturer for whatever sound device you have and install it.

THanks for the tip, but for some reason the icon showed up this morning
without doing anything.
