I'm starting to think that this problem is related to my not being
able to use Windows Movie Maker. I also cannot see video thumbnails
when I use Nero to create a DVD but I can edit video in Nero.

For the "class not registered"...no
guarantees...but it might be worth
a try to run the following command.
Go to...Start / Run...and type (or copy / paste)
the following...
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\qdv.dll
(yes, there's a space between the first 2 and %)
Press Enter.
You should see a dialog that says:
DllRegisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\qdv.dll succeeded
