no uppercase or special characters

after installing w2k security patches and sp 4, on a dell laptop, i find the
shift keys no longer work so that i cannot type capital letters or any of the
special characters such as the at sign, question mark, pound sign, etc.

i haven't found any solutions in the knowledge base or on the web.
suggestions appreciated.

This sounds like a hardware issue. I have several Dell laptops fully patched
that do not exhibit any problems. If you remove Sp4 does the problem
disappear? If you have 2 shift keys does it happen with both? Does the Caps
lock work?

Thanks for your comments. However after the problem appeared, uninstalling
SP4 did not cure it. The problem applies to both shift keys. It is possible
to render capitals with the Caps Lock key, but no way to render special
characters such all those above the numbers.

This is an odd one. I would call the manufacturer of the laptop as this is
certainly not a common issue.
