No Trails When Moving Desktop Icons

I have a new Dell Home XP laptop and all is well except the desktop icons
leave no trail when moved with the mouse. I've looked and asked several
places to no avail.
Any help most apprectaed.

Look at the properties of the mouse (double-click in control panel) , you
can configure various things.

If you have a mouse whose drivers support them (not all do), then
Control Panel - Mouse - Motion page should have a checkbox in the
middle "Cursor trails"
