I have XP Pro with SP2 and , when START>TURN OFF COMPUTER is selected
there are only 3 options available :- HIBERNATE , TURN OFF , RESTART .
There is no STANDBY available.

How do I arrange for STANDBY to appear , please ?

You may have Standby disabled in your BIOS. Restart your computer and press DEL or F2 or both (not at the same time) to enter your BIOS. If you have a motherboard or OEM logo appearing before Windows starts loading, it is ok to just start tapping the DEL and F2 keys to try and "guess" at the timing.

Once you are in the BIOS, check the Power menu options. Standby might be disabled by default. Also, while you're there, you may want to disable any "Full-size Logo" display options during boot.

I hope that helps.

If you press SHIFT key this moment -- does HIBERNATE turns to STANDBY?

Hit shift and it will toggle between Hibernate and Standby

If you mean if I press SHIFT key at the same time as I press "TURN OFF
COMPUTER" then , no it does not .

Hit shift and it will toggle between Hibernate and Standby

When I select START>TURN OFF COMPUTER - this get the small blue square
with the three choices :- HIBERNATE, TURNOFF , RESTART.

If you mean that I should hold the SHIFT key while selecting HIBERNATE
, then all that happens is that the PC goes into hibernation.

Is this the action sequence you mean me to use ?

If it is , then there is no alternation to STANDBY.

Thanks - I can't see anything in the BIOS which looks relevant - its a
reletively new m/b - so I've asked in the appropriate NG - if I get a
fix - I'll post back here for general interest.

No. If you press it not at the same time as you press "TURN OFF
COMPUTER" -- but if hold it down after that: when you see already these
3 buttons, before pressing anything else.

Once the small blue screen is displayed with HIBERNATE,TURNOFF,RESTART
showing, if I then hold down SHIFT - nothing changes - if I select
HIBERNATE while holding down SHIFT , the PC reacts in the same manner
as it does when I do this without using the SHIFT key , i.e. it goes
into HIBERNATE.
