no spaces between paragraph not working

I have a paragraph format style that has spaces designated for before and
after each paragraph. I have several paragraphs in a row using this style.
When I check the box that says "don't add space between paragraphs of the
same style," the spaces between the paragraphs remain.

Why doesn't this checkbox work? How can I fix it?

oh wow, I never knew that. My paragraphs are in a table, so that's why I'm
having problems. thank you so much!!
