no sound

The volume control dropped off my task bar. It can't be
accessed through programs/accessories either. I have no
sound at all. The device is Soundmax Integrated Digital
Audio. The device manager says the device is working
properly. The driver is installed. There are no conflicts.
In control panel/sound and audio devices I'm told there is
no device. At control panel/accessories/volume control I'm
told there is no active mixer device available, but the
device manager lists the Soundmax as the mixer device. I
try to install new hardware; Windows can't find any.
This started after I had problems with a new Creative
Jukebox Zen NX. It worked for a while, then when it started
to run it would suddenly stop and give a massage that the
device was not connected even though it was and its screen
was showing connection. No answer yet from Creative on this
one.
Help! any ideas?

you could try to uninstall the driver then reinstall it,
also see if there's an update at the driver's web site,
you can try system restore.

Volume Control - The volume icon does not appear in the
notification area (system tray)

Make sure Hide Inactive is disabled in Taskbar
Properties. In Sound and Audio Devices Properties, make
sure "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked. If it
still doesn't work, here are two workarounds:

Go to Start/Log off (log off then log back on).
Right-click the taskbar & select Task Manager under
Processes tab select Explorer.Exe & End Task. Under
Applications tab select New Task, type in "explorer" and
click OK.
