no sound

I'm running WMP9 on XP and there is no audio. Still have
video. Audio plays fine on other software programs. When
I try to play a music CD on WMP, my CD player "surges",
as if it's searching for something it can't find, but
never plays any audio. When I play a video CD, the video
plays fine (does not "surge"), but there is no audio.
There are no error messages. Could this be a corrupt
driver? I have Norton virus and internet security
software running. Should I remove these before trying a
new download? Can I download a new version of WMP on top
of the old?

Fred - do you have access to a spare CD player ? If so, try it and see if
its a hardware problem.
It sounds like yours could be knackered.

Cheers,
Jerry

PS : Just an extra thought - try a lens cleaner.

| over and over, never playing any audio, nor giving me an

Jerry-- Don't have access to another CD player, but I
don't think it's hardware related as CD's on that same
player play fine with other software, i.e., Real and
Creative. One other thing I noticed. I had "repeat" setup
on my Media Player, and when I set it to just play once,
it quit "surging". It only tries to play the CD once,
then quits. The other thing I noticed, is it seems to be
scanning through the list of songs on the CD before
quitting. Suggestions?

No access to a spare CD player. But I don't think it's
hardware related as CDs play fine on other software using
the same player. There has to be some reason why WMP9
isn't communicating with my player. What's frustating is
that I've tried reinstalling it and nothing changed. Can
you think of anything else?
