My speakers produce no sound on XP Pro

The Help instructs to test system sounds by selecting an event and a sound
in the SOUND tab and the press PLAY button. Yet I cannot found PLAY buttin
there. What is meant?

On the Equipment tab I have Audio Codecs and Audio (drivers without PnP)
both working properly.
Yet the Volume tab says "No Audio devices" and the Mixer Volume and Spicker
Volume sectiones are grayed.

How do I sort this out?

Does not seem that the proper audio drivers have been
installed or Windows XP would be able to see them. Note
that the audio drivers written specifically for XP have
to be installed...drivers for other OS's will not work.
And with few exceptions, such as the drivers for old,
legacy SoundBlaster cards, the audio drivers should be
PnP for dynamic set up of the system resources that need
to be used with the card. If needed, download the drivers
from the sound card maker's website.
