No sound

I wonder if anybody can help as all of a sudden my sound has gone and all I
get are beeps from the tower when error messages appear. There doesn't seem
to be anything else wrong. Any ideas gratefully received , thanks

is there a device under Sound Playback, Default Device? or is it "Greyed Out"?
