no sound

I no longer have sound on my laptop. I first realized it when I couldn't
play anything in iTunes. (Quicken, which always makes sounds when I open it,
didn't and neither do shutting down or starting up. So I went to Sounds &
Audio Devices in the Control Panel, but I'm not able to click on anything
under the Volume tab - Device Volume and Speaker Settings are both light
gray. Then I tried the Windows Troubleshooting Guide and, at the end, it
said it could not help me. I also ran dxdiag.exe and it says there are no
problems under the sound tab. After that I searched about a month's worth of
the previous posts and tried some of the suggestions listed there - still no
sound. I think I've included everything I can think of - any suggestions?

Thanks,
Beccy

I don't know which suggestions you've tried, so I'll re-suggest
reinstalling your sound drivers. It's been a common problem this month -
I wonder if the new MS patches had something to do with it.

Hi, wonder if anyone out there can help me out. I did all that was supposed
to be done under trobleshooting to get that sound back but still cant work.
Few times the laptop says that the drive is there and no problem with it but,
i cant locate it and there is still no sound.
The problem is similar to the other two mentioned here. wonder if they had
fixed theirs.
