No Sound Or Mic

Hey, I would LOVE to get some help here. The problem is, that my speakers are
definatley plugged in right, and so is my microphone and they dont work. For
example, when i try to play a song on iTunes, the speakers will not play any
sound whatsoever. Even if a system sound, it wont play.
The last time I tried to get help someone suggested re-setting the sound
card. I havent heard back from them since, so can someone please explain how
to me?
Also, If i try to record anything with my mic, say using MSN and doing a
voice clip, i try to talk and no sound is detected. I also have tried
recording sounds on "sound recorder" That came with my windows XP.
If you have any suggestions, they all are welcome!

Hard to say exactly without knowing what your system hardware is.

Try locating the motherboard chipset drivers, and re-installing them.

Then, identify the soundcard and re-install the correct drivers for it.
Belarc Advisor can help you identify the hardware.

Okay, well thats hard to do if I dont know how to reset the drivers, or
figure out what my mother board is in order to tell you.
What is belarc advisor?

Re-install, not reset.

Often there is a driver CD that comes with the motherboard.
or figure out what my mother board is in order to tell you.

Then perhaps what you should do is hire someone who does know how and can do
this for you, in person.

It's very difficult to help when the system is completely unidentified.

The motherboard often has the model number and manufacturer silk-screened on
it.
What is belarc advisor?

It is a piece of free, system audit software. It will identify the system
components. You use that information to locate drivers, so you can download
them and install them.

Have you tried switching the plugs for the mic and speakers? Sometimes
it's pretty hard to tell if they're correct and switching them won't
damage anything.
