Hello.

I have a problem when I play DVDs on Windows Vista Pre-RC1 and RC1 (I
haven't tried on Beta 2) : I have no sound or there are crackings instead of
the correct sound when I play my DVDs on Media Player or Media Center.

I don't have the problem when I play MPEG movies stored on my hard drive.

I don't have any problems at all when playing DVDs with Windows XP.

Thanks for your answers.

Wow

I get sound fading. Sound level decreases over say ten or fiftenn minutes to
nothing. If I log off and back on it is restored.

Sounds like you need updated sound card drivers, check the manufacturers
website.

Are you using Media Center to play the dvd's? According to the RC1 FAQ, sound
problems with DVD playback in MC are a known issue.

I have the same problem with Media Center and Media Player

On the contrary, when I play DVD in Interactual Player or WinDVD, I have no
problem

Same problem here with DVDs. Can go play Mpegs with sound, no problem, but
anything on DVD plays fine, but just silent.

Was this a clean install of RC1, or an upgrade from earlier pre-releases of
Vista? We are investigating an issue with the setup of audio decoder during
upgrades. Clean install should not have this problem, AFAIK. We would like to
know if it is otherwise.

Totally clean. Formatted the whole HD prior to doing installation.

I am having the same porblems on a clean install. No audio on dvd
playback for Windows Media Player, Media Center, and BSPlayer.

BSPlayer of course is a 3rd party application ofcourse, but it works
on XP just fine. So i suppose the program uses Media Players codec
as well.

We have isolated the problem to a code defect in audio decoder that shows-up
on Intel Pentium 3 or AMD K7 class of processors.

OK... that would make sense, since I am running an Athlon XP2500. Now that
begs the question, will there be a fix forthcoming?

I am having a similar problem with both Media Player and Media Center. The
problem I'm having is that there is no sound, just crackling when playing
dvds. Also, i checked the sound settings, and Media Center says "2 speakers
installed" even though the sound cracks when playing test sounds. Still get
other sounds perfectly when moving around in Media Center. In Media Player,
sound settings show that no sound playback devices are installed. no matter
how many times i try to set them, it still doesn't work. I'm running realtek
ac97 sound built onto a mboard with an nForce2 chipset. Both the Nvidia and
Realtek drivers work just fine in windows (vista RC1), but no sound in MC or
MP. I can't use Cyberlink PowerDVD because it plays choppy sound and no
video (ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128).

I am running an Athlon XP3000 which would explain that. Is there a patch
coming soon?

Ok, here's the solution I came up with. It only works in Media Center, not
in Media Player unfortunately. I am running an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 Video
Card on Vista RC1 Build 5600, so my solution is for ATI people. It should
work with NVidia Cards as well. Please let me know if it does.

First, go to "www.ati.com" and download all four ATI Multimedia Center 9.15
packages for Windows XP. Next, install them in the order you downloaded
them. You will need the original ATI CD to verify the DVD Decoder. If you
get a message from windows asking if the program installed correctly, giving
you two options to choose from, choose "Reinstall with recommended settings".
It will install correctly after that.

Next, go to
"http://mediacenterexpert.blogspot.com/search/label/Decoder Utility"
and download the Decoder Utility there. Then, run the utility and switch
out the Microsoft Decoder for the ATI/Nvidia decoder. You will get a warning
of possible system error, but click to get past it. Shouldn't be a problem.

Now, you should be able to play DVDs with perfect Video and Sound in Windows
Media Center, not Media Player. If you have any problems, let me know.
Please pass this on to others who are having the same problem.

Clean install of RC1, build 5600, no audio while playing from either of 2 DVD
drives installed in PC, both work fine in WinXP SP2. All other audio works
fine, only audio oost is while playing DVD. I also have the crackling sound.

You probably need new codecs for your dvd sound problem and the driver
probably needs work for the crackling. Report that to the driver writer,
usually the soundcard mfg. so they can work on it.
