No Sound on Windows XP or Windows Media Player

Help! I can't get any sounds to play on Windows Media Player or on my
Windows XP. Sounds were playing all along up until this point. I have lots
of MP3s which play just fine. When I go to the Volume tab under the Sounds
and Audio Properties window in Windows XP, it says "No Audio Device". HELP!

Well, I guess you should that a hardware audio device is installed and
working properly.
More than that I cannot say.
On the other hand, a bit more detail would make helping you easier.
What do you mean by 'I have lots of MP3s which play just fine.'? That you
can play MP3 encoded audio on player other than Windows Media Player?
Do none of the system sounds play?
In device manager, is an audio device installed, and does the property sheet
show that a hardware audio device is installed and working properly?
Is 'Wave' input muted ('Control Panel' 'Sounds and Audio Devices Properties'
'Volume' 'Advanced')?

Please post again.

Editing the registry is NOT the place to start, especially since the
contents in the original post don't describe the problem the registry edit
is aimed a fixing.
The motto for helping new users should be 'First, do no harm.' In other
words, start with differential diagnosis, NOT surgical intervention based on
too little information.

What I mean by my MP3's will play fine is that prior to this evening, I was
able to play files in an MP3 format. My system sounds will, in fact, play.
However, when I try to play songs in another player (Such as ITunes), I get
the same results - No songs playing.

I just went to the Control Panel, and tried to access the "Advanced Volume
Controls". The error message I received was "There are no active mixer
devices avaialable. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click
Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will
now close."

I am personally not very comfortable with editing the registry, but am
confused as to how this problem would have spontaneously happened.

Thanks for giving more detail.
I don't blame you for not wanting to directly edit the registry. The
problem you have related is not spoken to by the registry edit to which you
were referred.

As to why your problem appeared, well, there are lots of possibilities, but
your specific case would be difficult to diagnose without being there.
With a system as complex as a computer/operating system/applications, stuff
happens. What have you changed recently about your system?

Does 'Device Manager' show a hardware audio device installed?
Does the 'Devices' tab in 'Options' for Windows Media Player' show
'Speakers', and does the property sheet for 'Speakers' show a device
selected?

I suggest you try posting in the Windows Media Player newsgroup
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player .
Please post any solution that works for you; it can help others.

Had this same problem, here's how I solved it..

Go to Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services

Scroll down to Windows Audio, right-click & then left-click Properties

In Startup Type, enable Automatic. Reboot.
