Visit the laptop manufacturers' support web pages (downloads in particular)
for your model of laptop and download the latest sound card driver and
install it.
I'm having the same problem with a Thinkpad R52 with Win XP Pro SP2. I've
tried uninstalling the audio drivers and downloading the latest versions
from IBM, but it didn't help. I check in Services->Windows Audio and it is
started. Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices says "No Audio
Device". The hardware Device Manager says everything is working properly.
I even tried reinstalling Windows from the I386 directory, thinking maybe
the kmixer.dll or something like that was corrupted or missing. Of course
that didn't do anything but waste an hour. Maybe this is a clue: I had to
call Microsoft to activate by phone after the reinstall because it said my
system hardware had changed significantly since the last install and
wouldn't accept my product key.
I installed Windows fix KB920872. I'm running out of ideas. Got any? IBM
won't help be because my warranty ran out 3 weeks ago.
Thanks,
Bob
