no sound in themes

I hve checked everything I can think of. Ihave no start
up sound or sound when you min ar max programs etc. Al
volumes are up. I can listen to the radio and play a
music cd. too just no sound for the desk top. REloaded xp
and ended up with a new user...but it had sound...deleted
new user ID so I'm back to havin no sound. Could I have
a file missing?

Try this: Start/Help and Support/type: troubleshooter /click the arrow/Sound
Troubleshooter is the first one listed. Click it and follow the instructions.
