I recorded a small SMF onto a 3.5 disk from a digital piano. When I put the
disk in my computer, Media Player seems to do everything it's supposed to do,
but I get no sound. Computer is a Dell '04, and the volume and equalizer
buttons are all up.

Do you have a device associated with MIDI?

In XP Home: Control_Panel | Sounds_and_Audio_Devices | Hardware | Audio |
MIDI_music_playback

If the device is a software synthesizer, like the "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW
Synth", then check that you have a slider "SW Synth" in your Volume Control
mixer. Unmuted, of course. It is likely that its volume will be controlled
by the "Wave" slider in addition to that one.
