No sound from DVD

Sal Monella

Hi,

I just installed a new Lite On DVD Rom and the Cyberlink PowerDVD 4.0
software that came with it. The video is fine but I can't get sound from
a DVD. I've tried the onboard sound on an Abit BH-7 motherboard and I
put in an older sound card from another system. In both cases I can get
audio from a music CD or a CD ROM in the drive, but I get no sound from
a DVD either through the speakers or the headphone jack. I've tried all
the settings in the software and I get the same thing. This is my first
DVD drive so maybe there is something simple to it? Bad drive? Any
ideas?

Thanks

headphone jack from the drive or your sound card? Have you turned up/unmuted the gain on the 'DVD/CD-ROM slider on the mixer? Did
you use the "analog" connector from the DVD to the Sound card?

Yes

Yes. There is a two pin digital audio out from the DVD ROM but I don't
have a cable for it. Maybe that's what I need but it seems like it
should work with the analog no?

hmmm no sound from the drive is not a good thing....as it is not reliant on the sound card to produce sound. You should have digital
playback with the drive through the IDE ribbon...maybe you have to 'enable digital sound' in your multimedia properties?

Thanks for trying to help me figure it out. Turns out I needed to update
DirectX. I went looking for shareware players to download to see if it
was just a software problem and most of them mentioned needing some
version of DirectX or higher. So I figured I would try it and I
downloaded the latest version. I now have sound.

Cheers

Well I just checked it and there is still no DVD sound from the
headphone jack of the drive. I guess it is only for audio CDs because I
did get sound from those. Good thing I have a headphone jack on my
speakers. ;-)

That jack is disabled when digital audio is enabled.

The audio for a DVD is not processed in the drive at all, the player
software processes it and outputs in out the soundcard.

interesting...as I totally brain farted earlier....DVD's won't produce sound from the headphone jack on the drive but music CD's
(analog) can be heard from the Headphone jack of the DVD ROM.
