no sound from dvd player

Peter

I recently passed on a pc loaded with XP Pro (not sure of mobo manufacturer)
it has a 2.3mhz celeron cpu 750 mb ram and a GeForce4 MX440-8X graphics
card, the person who I sold it to informed me that he had no sound while
watching DVD's all other sound works, cd player, windows sounds play,
downloaded movies play but nothing on DVD. I swapped the DVD player for an
asus DVD rewriter that came out of my own pc so I know its working but on
his machine no sound while playing DVD's. It always used to play ok. Anyone
got any suggestions? I used the sound lead that comes from the back of the
DVD drive and plugged it in the sound header on the mobo.

TIA

Peter

Forgot to mention, both DVD players work fine in another machine, sound and
vision.
