After having to totally reboot my computer 3 days ago, it
has reloaded without recognising any sound devices!
Everything is hooked up correctly, with volumes adjusted
etc. but still nothing happens. The spekers will turn
on, and in the device manager screen under sounds
controller, the title of Avance AC97 Audio appears with a
yellow exclamation mark over it. The device status of
this appears as follows: This device cannot start. (Code
10. I have followed through all of the troubleshooters
to try and fix the problem but to no avail. I am at a
loss, and any help you could give me would be greatly
appreciated! Thanks

Kevin,
First go to your Control Panel > Sounds & Audio Devices > Audio > under
'Sound playback' heading- click your default device > OK.
Now go to your 'Device Manager' and right-click on your driver with the
yellow error and 'Uninstall'. < OK > Reboot. Your system should locate the
new driver and install (check Device Manager after rebooting). Still have
the error?
Drew

Goto the Device Manager and uninstall audio driver, restart the machine
then reinstall the driver.Next update the driver.

Whenever i go to this screen there is no default device,
it just says "no playback devices". I have also tried
uninstalling and reinstalling the device and it does find
the new hardware, but when it tries to reinstall it, it
says a problem has occured and it may not work properly.
Any ideas?

Thanks, but when i tried to reinstall it the same
problems occured. It is putting it down to a "code 10",
any idea what this might be?

In the Control Panel, go to Add Hardware > check 'yes I have already
connected the hardware'- Next > scroll to bottom of opened menu and click
'add a new hardware device'-Next > choose 'install the hardware that I
manually select from a list'-Next > hi-lite 'Sounds, Video & game
controllers'-Next > select your Audio manufacturer then the Model, place
your CD in-Next. follow directions.

Each time that i tried to do this, it would allow me to
get to the point were i have highlighted 'Sounds, Video &
game controllers' nad a new window would open up, but
this would subsequently fail to respond after a minute or
two and remain blank! No idea why though! The computer
is working perfectly appart from this 1 problem! Really
appreciate your help mate, and any more ideas you have
would be great thanks!

Mine was also stuck on a blank white window at the same stage you mentioned
but finally kicked in after a minute. Maybe wait a little longer, not sure
what else to say.

Drew

Maybe try and copy the driver file from your CD to
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers then reboot. Or try re-installing the CD your
driver is on. That might work.

I have had similar problems, still no fix!

After Installing SP2 I have completely lost sound. On the Microsoft TechNet
page, under ac97 search I found a usefull thread. (The one called No Sound
Device). I have tried everything, but so far no luck!

I have a K7S5A Motherboard with a C-Media - VIA VT8233 chip on it. All over
the web this chip is causing problems, however the only solution I have found
is to wipe windows and start over! This makes no sense as there has to be an
answer, please can you help?

I am getting a 'Code 10 - The Device Cannot Start' dialogue. In Sounds &
Audio Devices (Control Panel, Audio Tab), under sound playback, it says no
playback devices (hence NO sound at all, nada!). I cannot select it as there
is nothing there. Before SP2 it worked fine, although I might have had it
disabled and been using on on the GeForce Graphics Card, I can't remember,
but unless I system restore to before SP2, I won't ever find out!

When I right click on 'my computer' in windows explorer, go to the hardware
tab, and click on 'device manager' I can see that under 'sound, video and
game controllers' - 'C-Media AC97 Audio Device has a yellow explanation
mark'. After following the steps in the online advice forum, reloading the
original drivers from the motherboard CD, I now ALSO have a yellow
explanation mark by 'SiS 7012 Audio Driver.

Once again, I have run out of ideas, please help. I know SP2 caused the
problem, however a fix was imposible to locate.

I fixed it woohoo!!!

I can’t say if this will work for everyone because I don’t know what
hardware you have or if it’s only because of what I suspect might be true! I
suspected that I had a GeForce graphics card, which at the time of
installation on the motherboard conflicted with the onboard soundcard. The
result was that the onboard soundcard, the one that is causing people
problems, kicked back in and caused mayhem.

As I stated before I deleted the 'C-Media AC97 Audio Device’, and re-started
my machine, with no luck. I followed the above said method (Other peoples
posts to choose hardware drivers manually) on the 'SiS 7012 Audio Driver’,
which screwed that one! Although it screwed it, no difference was made. I
also installed new ffdshow and DivX codec’s, and upon re-start there was no
difference.

As I am paranoid, I then thought that id cut a corner, maybe I had, not
sure. As suggested by a friend who is a genius at this stuff, I had deleted
the 'C-Media AC97 Audio Device’ by simply pressing delete on it. Instead, I
double clicked on both audio devices fore-mentioned, clicked on the drive
tab, and clicked on uninstall (on both separately). Upon reinstall, my PC
picked up both audio devices, and a third thing, but it disappeared before I
could read it, so both were installed in some way. At this point, I rechecked
the device manager and the 'C-Media AC97 Audio Device’ is no longer present,
BUT I saw it accept it! The 'SiS 7012 Audio Driver’ is present and it looks
like an old version (Before this I installed the newest version, approved by
Microsoft licence thing, and it also had a ‘Code 10’ error). The details of
this old one that works are as follows, hope it helps:

SIS 7012 Audio Driver:

Driver Provider: Silicon Integrated Systems Corp (2.01.01)
Driver Date: 11/10/2001
Driver Version: 5.10.0.6020
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publ…

In all likelihood the drivers probably came off the two CD’s in both my CD,
and DVD players. These came with the computer and are as follows:

1) ‘Mainboard’ Version 1.0S (Manual called 1st Mainboard for the
motherboard – AN11)

2) ‘3D Graphics Card Driver CD Version 1.0 – by ‘Hightech Information
System Ltd’.

I have no idea if this will defiantly help other people, but if it helps you
find a similar/parallel method of fixing it on your own system, I hope this
has helped.

In Device Manager, highlight the hardware in question, and under the Action
Pull-Down menu, click on Enable.
