First let me say "I'm a novice." After reinstalling Windows XP Home. My
sound device was gone. Also, we now have to hit F1 to get to our user
names. Actually, I don't recall how I installed the O/S. Prior to
installing (after the system crashed) there was no problem sound normal boot
etc..

I need help ......Please.

Thank you

If there is no sound, then you probably will need to reinstall the drivers
for your soundcard or onbard sound. Most likely after you reinstall Windows,
you should reinstall your motherboard drivers as well and that should have
been on a CD. If not, check the web for your motherboard manufacturer for
the latest drivers

Not sure whether you did a Clean Install ( formatted the hard drive ),
a Repair Install or just reinstalled WinXP over
itself. In any case, you will have to reinstall all the Updates and
necessary drivers. Sound driver is one. If you don't know
what you have in your PC, a integrated sound chip or a separate PCI
Sound Card go here and download this free
System Information Utility.
http://www.aplusfreeware.com/categories/util/optdiag.html Everest Home
Edition.
Once Everest is installed, go to Computer>Summary. In the right
column you should scroll down to Multimedia>Audio
Adaptor. It will tell you what you have on your system. Post back
here that info and I will help you further.

I just put the cd in & started hitting keys......As I stated I'm a novice.
If I formatted the hard drive, I did so in error.

I have a cd the has drives on it but which do I download???

If you have a Software CD that came with the computer then it probably
has the Audio driver on it.

I have a software cd it says Audio Drivers. I extracted it & installed it,
yet after restarting the computer there still is no sound. This message
appears prior to installation........IMPORTANT NOTE:( Win XP users) When you
select 'Install Now', you may be given the following four choices - Save,
Open, Cancel,More info. You MUST select 'Open' for the installation to work.

Problem is it only has "run & save." After selecting "run" SoundMax install
pops-up. The messages state "drivers not installed." Restart computer &
reinstall. So, what is going on here. Should I choose save on the next
installation this is my 3rd attempt.

Thanking you in advance for your time,
