Loss of sound after clean reinstall

We locked ourselves out of the administrator account on our desktop and had
to do a clean reinstall of XP Pro. Since the reinstall there is no sound.
Under the hardware icon in Control Panel the device is listed as "multimedia
audio controller" with a yellow question mark as the icon. Clicking on this
generates a message "The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)".

the previous version of XP Pro which had no sound problems was loaded in the
shop. The supplier's documentation lists the device only as "Sound 8 Channel
Audio 3D 7.1" and I have been unable to get any response with further details
from the supplier (in Vietnam). the mainboard is Gigabyte 81G 1000 PRO-G and
includes various Intel components. Can anyone suggest how to remedy this
apparent lack of drivers?

I had thought that reinstalling XP would automatically delete earlier
versions but after an interrupted installation I now have three listed on the
start-up black screen, with the new version as default. Don't know if this
is likely to interfere with operations like sound. Is there a simple way to
remove the superseded versions? (noting that I am not a programmer or
tecchie).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Joeth,

The drivers for that motherboard's onboard audio can be downloaded from here:
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_DownloadFile.aspx?FileType=Driver&FileID=817
(click on the Download link beside the preferred country)

As for the multiple installations of XP, go to Michael Stevens' XP FAQ page:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/xpfaq.html
Scroll down to #20 "I have two installations of XP on the same
partition...." and click on it to expand the information beneath.

thanks Patti and Mark - problems solved. I couldn't get an automatic driver
installation through XP but downloaded from Gigabyte as recommended and AOK
now. the daughter has her music!

the process to get rid of redundant XP installations worked OK too, although
my computer didn't accept the Cmd Prompt "echo%windir%" so I had to take a
punt on which folders to delete (I was pretty sure anyway).

thanks again.

You're very welcome! :)

It was probably difficult to discern when reading the instructions, but
there is a space between "echo" and "%windir%"
