no sound at all after SP1 upgrade

After installing WindowsXP SP1, I have absolutely no sound
whatsoever on my PC. I'm fairly proficient with computers
and have exhausted my ability to try and identify the
problem. Has anyone else experienced this same problem?
Feedback appreciated.

I get the sound but have no mic.I have MSN messenger and
the wife as the same she lose her sound but it seems to
come back after shut down. Mine has no mic yet when i
test it on messenger audio wizard its there. I was
thinking of try Netscape Navigator have tried evrything
else.
