No sound after upgrading hard drive

~BonsCreationz~

I'm running win xp pro. I had a 40 gig hard drive and upgraded from 40 to 500
gig and once I did this I lost the sounds on my computer, now I can switch
between the 2 hard drives and when I hook the 40 gig back up I have sound but
when I put the 500 back on I've got no sounds at all. These are SATA Drives
by the way in case anyone needs to know..... I've spoken to a tech guy at a
computer repair shop on how to fix this issue but when I attempt to do it
myself, I get some kinda weird error message that, if i delete this windows
won't rn properly or something along those lines, can ANYONE help me. I've
been struggling with this issue for the better part of 8 months and I would
REALLY like to have my sound back!!!... Thanks in advance to those who read
and reply and help resolve this issue.

What do you mean by upgraded ?

You took the 40 gig out and put in a 500 gig, or you simply added a 500 gig
to your existing setup ?

If the former, then it sounds like you didn't install your soundcard
drivers. TO check :

Right Click on My Computer > Harware > Device Manger > find the entry for
your soundcard > anything there ? If not, simply install your soundcard XP
drivers.

If the latter, then do this :

Right Click on My Computer > Harware > Device Manger > find the entry for
your soundcard > is there a yellow triangle against it ? Whatever you find
righ click on the entry and un-install it > re-boot > let XP find the new
harware. Let it try and find the drivers and install them > re-boot.

If XP can't find the drivers, or says that your card is installed but may
not function correctly, install the XP drivers.

Re-post if none of this works, but explain what you mean by "upgrade".

Jjerry

ok what I mean by upgrade, is I took the 40 gig out and put a 500 gig in, I
tried getting help with taking the 500 gig and using it as the Master Drive
and using the 40 as a slave but with them being SATA Drives I couldnt find
anyone to help me with it OK So on with my orginal problem. I took a screen
shot of my device manager, you can find the image at this link

As you can see there are no yellow exclamation marks, so I'm not sure how to
uninstall the sound drivers to reinstall them, I'd really like to have my
sounds back tho, I do play games on my pc and listen to music on myspace.
If chatting with me online would be easier to resolve this problem, your
more then welcome to add me to your chat messenger, my ID on yahoo is
bonscreationz05. Thanks for the help JJ i GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!

I don't do yahoo.

Its still not clear.

When you tried using the 500 gig as the Master, did you install XP on it ?
If not and you have them both in the PC, then its still using the 40 gig as
the Master. You can check this out by taking out the 40 gig and trying to
boot. if noting happens then there is the problem - no XP on the new drive.

I would have installed XP + all drivers on the 500gig drive, formatted the
40gig drive and use it as a slave.

So you have two choices :

1) keep the 40 gig and use the 500 gig as a slave. In this case go to
solution A
or
2) install XP on the 500 gig then re-format the 40 gig and use it as a
slave. In this case go to soution B

Solution A :

Your drivers seem to be installed. Double slick on the loudspeaker iconin
the task bar > make sure NOTHING is muted and ALL sliders are up to maximum.
Sometimes when you re(-nstall XP the volume is either muted or low.

Solution B

XP has installed generic drivers. Follow the steps described above "Device
Manager" (from the place where you took the image). Make sure you've
downloaded XP specific drivers from the soundcard manufacturer' website, or
use the WP drivers on the installation CD that came with your PC.

Or repost.

Cheers,
Jerry
