No sites found if http

When I'm browsing with internet explorer 6 (or
Netscape 6) I cannot view any webpages that use http. If
I go to a www site, there's no problem at all. If I type
in the identical http site in AOL (I use version 8) the
site comes up immediately. This has happened with several
different sites. Sure, I understand that I could use AOL
for the http sites, but Explorer is more stable. I have
tried resetting the defaults to make sure that I didn't
put an unwise setting on the browser, but it doesn't
help. I use ME for my operating system. Any ideas?

Keep in mind that HTTP is the protocol not a site.
