No rights on HKEY_Local_Machine registry map 'optionalcomponents'

D

DutchRichard

Can't remove or update several programs. Everytime I try the proces stops
halfway removing or installing with the following error message:

Can't open key
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\optionalcomponents

Although I have all administrator rights I don't have any rights on that
map. This wouldn't be a problem if I was able to give Full control rights (or
other) to Everyone or Adminisrors as suggested in several similar posts. When
I try to do so the following message appears:
Can't save changes on permissions. Acces denied.

Please help.

Hi, DutchRichard.
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\optionalcomponents

I have
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

but it doesn't have the "optionalcomponents" entry. (Just Default,
IntelliPoint and itype.) Can you simply delete that key, using RegEdit?
Would that solve your problem? (I'm currently running the Win7 pre-beta and
don't want to reboot into Vista to check this just now; is it the same in
Vista?) Naturally, you'll want to Export that key before you change it,
just in case.

Hi R.C.
Thanks for your fast reply.
Unfortunately I can't do anything with the key. Deleting, renaming, changing
and even viewing is forbidden. So I can't even see with keys are in the map.
Regards Richard

Addition:
Although I can't see which keys are in the map, in all cases the
installation or removal of a programm fails because the process can't reach
the MSFS key in this map.

I'm running Vista Home Premium. How do I enable the 'real' administrator?
This account isn't available in confiuration/account management.

Thanks for giving me a look insight your map.
Because I don't have any rights on the map (not even a reading permit) I
can't see that on my PC.
Now waiting for the golden tip to make me able to change the rights... :-(

What do you mean you can't see which keys are in the ' map ' ?

Are you talking about the left and right panes of regedit ?

In my registry ,(Vista Ultimate) on the left side there is:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
with 'OptionalComponents' as a sub-key, thus:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents
This is on the left-hand pane of regedit. OptionalComponents has several sub-keys,
IMAIL, MAPI and MSFS.

If you don't have that sub-key and you want to import it, here is mine :
==========================================================

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Hi, DutchRichard.

You continually refer to a "map", but you fail to define that term in this
context for us, despite several requests. Is this a language problem? Is
English your native language?

WHAT MAP?

Might be a language question (native language Dutch).
In refer to the map/directory:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents
Maybe this must be refered as 'Key' but in my perspective the keys (MSFS and
others) are within this map/directory or whatelse. I hope I cleared this part.
My problem is that I'm not allowed to acces \OprionalComponents and primary
the key MSFS within it and that I'm not allowed to give myself tese rights.
Still hoping for a clue.

1) enable the 'real' administrator account
2) login and edit the registry from that account
3) disable the administrator account

I never did do #3, I like to use that account...

Hey All,

After struggling with this issue for a couple of day (trying to
install Adobe Reader 9.3 and failing towards the end because I did not
have permission to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents even though I am
Administrator), I did two things and was able to install Reader (a
dubious improvement):

I deleted the OptionalComponents key in the registry (figure that the
install would write new keys if it needed them)
I temporarily disabled PC Tools Spyware Doctor (there was something on
the Adobe site referring to disabling another tool, Spy Sweeper, so I
thought it was worth a try).

I don't know which of these did the trick, but it installed without
problems since then!

Hope this helps,

Ron
