No performance

Using W2KPro. Until recently, worked fine. Suddenly now W2K loads ok then in
a short period of time, develops extremely slow performance (to almost stops)
No programs running, just continuous HDD access light. Processes will
eventually work (in about 5min intervals).
Can get system up in safe mode without problem. Any suggestions/ideas of
what problem is and how to fix? Do not have original OS disc (old donated
system), so am a little leary of too much messing without experience. Can
anyone help?

You've run AV scans and malaware scans?
You have a firewall installed?

Scans are negative. System can be started and run in Safe Mode without the
problem occurring. Firewall is installed and operating.
