Poor Performance - Vista & Nvidia 7800GTX

Since installing Vista Ultimate, my system performance has been AWFUL!.
Things that I was able to do routinely under XP are now unusable - mostly
related ot gaming performance. For instance, other computers in my house
that have far less horsepower are able to run C&C 3 without a problem, but
this system takes almost 5 minutes to get through the intro, and after that,
everything moves at a pace that makes the game unplayable. Even old games
like Civ4 move extremely slow. Also, display on my Hauppauge TV card renders
it unwatchable. THIS IS BEYOND FRUSTRATING! I have updated every driver,
searched every forum, and called every support line, but have yet to get any
resolution HELP PLEASE!!!

My system configuration:

Windows Vista Ultimate
AMD 4400+ CPU
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
ASUS Nvidia 7800 GTX Top - 512MB
2GB RAM

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I'm surprised that a fresh Vista load would run that slowly, especially with
a nice graphics card like that. Have you looked at the task manager
processes tab to see what's taking the most CPU time? Have you turned off
the Windows Search indexing service (must be Disabled, not merely Stopped)?
What other software do you have installed for antivirus or firewall? Have
you looked in your advanced display properties to see what can be tweaked
for your video card's performance? Might there be something in your BIOS
that slows it down? What are your Vista Performance scores? Which Hauppauge
card do you have, where did you get the drivers, and are you seeing the
performance problems there in Media Center or a Hauppauge application?

As for the games, are you running any of them in compatibility mode? Have
you checked with their manufacturers to see what they say about Vista?

Yes, Vista is slower than XP and 64 Bit Vista slower yet, some of which
will improve as drivers improve and some of which is the penalty for
"Greater Security / DRM"

However it should not be that slow, and I have to say that if this
started with a brand new clean install then it sounds like something may
be wrong below the OS level.

Look in the BIOS and make sure the clock speed seems sensible, has
something caused it to automatically reduce clock speed (Bad CPU fan for
example).

When it was first put together the first thing that should have been
done is run the CD that Asus supply to install system drivers. Was this
done and without any errors being flagged? You might find updated
versions on the Asus website - sometimes these work better sometimes not :)

If the MB's chipset drivers are not functioning properly all goes to
hell in many cases.

Was this a clean Vista install or some kind of upgrade path from XP?

I have disabled the Index service and killed the Sidebar. Since then, my CPU
seems to be fine - I rarely see it spike up over 20% except when strting up
some apps.

As for firewall, I am running the McAfee Suite - firewall, AV, and privacy
service.

My performance scores are:
Processor - 5.0
Memory - 5.1
Graphics - 5.9
Gaming Graphics - 3.8
Primary Hard Drive - 5.4

Obviously, the Gaming Graphics score is out of whack based on teh video card
that I have. I've messed around with Nvidia controlpanel options, but
nothing seems to do the trick.

I am running the Hauppauge 1600. I replaced my (non-compatible) ATI HDTV
Wonder when I upgraded to Vista. The Hauppauge app (WinTV2000) is really
bad, but Media Center is much worse.

This system ran beautifully under XP. I bought a new hard drive, and did a
clean install of Vista, and that is when my problems began.
