in reading for the last couple of days i want to flash my bios(since i think
i might have a hardware problem.

w2k pro sp4
amd 2500
fsb 333
1 gig ram
20 gig c:
160 gig e:

hello
last week i had a system freeze and i restarted to a considerably slower
machine. i tried reboot several times and have the same super slow start
up(at this point the system is unusable).

i booted with w2k rescue disks, but when i get an a: prompt i can't type
anything.
i tried to boot to safe mode when the screen comes up the arrow keys will
not allow me to move the cursor. hitting enter does nothing, the light on the
keyboard is not on but why would F8 work? i need the keyboard to work to
flash the BIOS.

i have FRESH DIAGNOSE installed and when i benchmark my c: drive, it shows
almost no write speed(.46).

i bought NORTON system works and ran the utilities(windoctor+diskdoctor) and
fixed errors on both. virus scan showed no virus.

ran docmem to check ram and everything passed.

during boot keyboard light does not come on until <loading preferences>.

any help is appreciated!

Hi,

First of all Flashing your Bios will more often create new problems
than fix the ones you have. If the BIOS was working fine and you
didn’t make any hardware changes that required a flash, I would leave
it alone.

This is a simple question but it has caused big problems for me that
made me go "doh" when I finally figured it out - but is your
keyboard and mouse plugged into the correct ports? Have you tried a
different keyboard and mouse. Not being able to type at the A:\ gives
me the idea that the problem is your keyboard. If there is a faulty
key that is held down or not working then it will overrun the system
with "input" causing the slow boot.

I have had keyboard problems make it look like the motherboard was
failing. When I replaced the keyboard the problems went away.

Cheers,

Lara
