No Outlook Express?

Chris spake thusly on 1/19/2007 7:14 PM:
I went back to Thunderbird, and I really wanted it to work, but I had
all sorts of trouble with filters. This apparently is something many
users are also having trouble with. It may have been that I tried the
new beta, and then went back to an earlier released version, but I got
tired of messing with it.

I've never had problems with filters. They work quite nicely for me. I
used 1.5 since it came out, but I've been using the 2.0 alpha for
several weeks now and still, no problem with filters.
I am now trying Windows Live Mail Desktop (I don't even use Windows Live
Mail ;) ) and it does have a goofy interface, but there are some nice
things about it.

I just didn't care for the interface. Besides, between the OS and
Office 2007 (both of which I've got on pre-order with Amazon.com) I
think that's enough from MS. All my other software will be from
elsewhere. :)

Then how would I go about transferring my contacts, messages and account
information from OE, which is stored in DBX? I see Windows Mail has the
option to transfer from OE6, but I think I had an earlier version before I
installed Vista...

Contacts are stored in an *.wab file. Copy that to Documents and make sure
it is not Read Only. Then open Windows Contacts and click Import on the
toolbar. Follow the obvious.

Messages are stored in DBX files. Make a new folder in Documents and copy
all the DBX files, including Folders.dbx, to it. Make sure they are not
Read Only and use WinMail's File | Import.

In OE go to Tools | Accounts and export each account as an IAF file. You
can import these into WinMail via Tools | Accounts.

If you had OE5 or 5.5 before the instructions are the same because the data
structures are the same. Except maybe the WAB file in OE 5.0.

I must have 5.0, because there is no .wab file. How would I transfer my
contacts without that file? Also, I followed your directions for importing
the DBX files, but WinMail still didn't recognise the files in File/Import.

ALL versions of OE use a WAB file. The structure was changed in 5.01 so
that 4 or 5.0 can't import from the WAB for a later version.

Open OE.
Open the Address Book from OE.
In the Address Book click File | Export | Other Address Book | Text File
(Comma Separated Values).
OE can import from the resulting CSV file.

For the messages, did you include Folders.dbx?
Did you make sure they are not Read Only?
If the answer is Yes to both then you used the wrong DBX files or OE had
already lost the messages.

Each OE identity on each Windows user has their own set of DBX files.

Oh well, thanks anyway for your help, at least I got my account and contacts
transferred over with your advice.

At the moment, the only way to get individual dbx files imported into a
WinMail store is to use a 3rd party program to extract the messages from the
dbx file first and then they can be dragged into WinMail. See also

Outlook Express is now Windows Mail. Same program, different name (plus a
few updates). It does allow the newsgroups (and even includes the MS public
newsgroup server).

Lucky I'm already bald. Windows Mail has me tearing hair out. An e-mail
arrived with a theatre invite with a link to click to raise a return e-mail.
I've received many such before in OE and never a problem. In Windows Mail
nothing happens. A line in the status bar indicates mailto:email address etc
& but the WM e-mail composition screen doesn't launch.

Tried Outlook and it goes looking for a program to link to but not much luck
there. (Outlook has always been and still is a heavy cumbersum thing). I
downloaded Thunderbird and the links worked so I've lined up the tickets.

Went back to Windows Mail and trawled through the Options to see if there
was a setting. No luck. Tried the link again in Windows Mail and blimey, it
launched the Thunderbird composition window!

Wow -- I found the solution - after hours of looking where to look and then
working out the right question! Had to go into this new thing in Vista
called Default Programs (which I don't fully understand yet). Burried deep
in there is the Mailto: option and this is not linked to any program. I
attached it to Windows mail -- and it worked!
