No Outlook Express?

Rick

Do we get Outlook Express with Vista? It doesn't look like it to me. Are
there any free newsreaders similar to OE?

Outlook Express has been replaced by Windows Mail which is very similar and
can be used as a NNTP client.

If irritated by WinMail, you could try XanaNews
news://forums.talkto.net/xananews.support
Paul-B and Jeff Gaines posted here today that they like it with Vista.

Windows Mail is basically Outlook Express 7. It introduces several new bugs
and no Hotmail support!

Windows Mail has several improvements, some of which work. The most
important is the end of the DBX data storage.

Yes, I agree, that and the search box are good improvements. The junk mail
filtering may also be good, but I have been forced to use Outlook instead,
due to the lack of Hotmail support (but with my POP2, IMAP and Hotmail
accounts, I have found Outlook to run like treacle).

I still think that Windows Mail could have been a lot better, and has a few
bugs that need to be fixed.

Ouch! lol

Folks not completely happy with Vista Mail can also try Windows Live Mail
Desktop. It has a full newsreader and does support Hotmail (er, Windows
Live Mail).

Hotmail Popper will allow you to pick up mail from Hotmail, it works in
Vista with UAC off.

The change to standard eml mail boxes is a big plus though.

It also has a goofy-ass inteface.

Folks not completely happy with Vista Mail can also try Mozilla Thunderbird.

That's a funny statement. If they don't work, are they really
improvements?

He stole that line from me. <G> I called them "new features" I think
though.

I don't think any of us would disagree with you there.

I went back to Thunderbird, and I really wanted it to work, but I had
all sorts of trouble with filters. This apparently is something many
users are also having trouble with. It may have been that I tried the
new beta, and then went back to an earlier released version, but I got
tired of messing with it.

I am now trying Windows Live Mail Desktop (I don't even use Windows Live
Mail ;) ) and it does have a goofy interface, but there are some nice
things about it.
