I have a Windows XP Pro machine SP2 and there is no option to Map Network
Drives either under tools or when right click on a network shared folder. I
can see all the machines and their shared folders but I have no option to
map them. Any ideas?

Bryan,

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on your XP SP2
computer? Make sure that the workstation service (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services) is running too.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers give the same result.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

I don't think it can be the Workstation service since you can't even browse
the network without it running. This is a weird one since I can browse the
network and see everyone's shares but I can't map them not because of an
error but because the option is just not there.

Anyone else with an idea?

It probably isn't, but did you check anyway (and maybe that will provide a clue
to another diagnostic that may provide the solution)?

And what does browstat show?
