No open program boxes in taskbar

When I open programs the boxes on the taskbar which usually appear do not.
Therefore to change programs I have to use alt-tab, which can cause
instability. Also, when I close the "quick launch" toolbar, the entire
taskbar disappears even though autohide is off.

Perhaps the "instability" is caused by whatever is interfering with
showing the open programs on the taskbar. While nothing is impossible
with Windows, I think if there are any ill effects from Alt-Tab in a
system then they show a deeper problem.

Have you updated your virus and spyware definitions and done full
scans since this behavior started?
