I have an MP3 player that is supposed to be disconnected from the PC by
clicking on the new hardware Icon and closing from there. But I do not have
a new hardware Icon in my systray.

TIA

I don't know the solution to your problem but you can make a shortcut for Safely
remove hardware in quick launch or wherever you want :

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Hi B.W.,
If I understood correctly you mean Remove Safely Icon with Green Arrow, to
show this follow this:
Righ Click on you Start Button and select Properties on the Taskbar and
Start Menu Properties locate down and click on the Button labled Customize
Oposite [ ] Hide Inactive Icons ( Be sure this box is selected) and there you
can set the Icon to Always Show or Hide when Inactive.
Hope this what you after.
Please let us know your findings.

Thanks for the advice.

1. There is no > in the system tray so presumably all the selected Icons are
showing there.

2. I tried the procedure suggested by nass, thinking this should work. But
I still don't have the icon showing up.

I restarted windows in case that was required and then looked back at the
Properties of the system tray and Safely Remove Hardware (which is in a
folder) is now showing as Always Show, but of course as I say, it isn't.
Very strange. There's no limit to how many icons show up here is there? I
don't have to do anything in the Start Menu do I?

Maybe I still have some setting stopping this happening.

TIA

Hi B.W,
Look in your BIOS if Plug and Play is enabled?.
Then I think this feature is just launched by Windows when a New Hardware is
detected Automatically and doesn't show always just to keep things neat/Tidy
on the Taskbar, try to uncheck the [ ] Hide Inactive Icons and Reboot and
see if it will appear.
HTH.
