Using a three month old Sony Vaio laptop, schizy to NO networking has become
a problem.
Using wired and wireless (secured WAP) It detects a nearby unsecured network
(not mine) and can connect, but to MY secured site it loops in "acquiring IP
address". It will NOT connect to the network with the ethernet cable. Other
laptops and, of course, this machine, CAN connect via wired OR wireless, and
have no issues.
I uninstalled in device manager and reinstalled via startup all networking
devices.
I turned off the windows firewall, and the Norton firewall. Nothing is
different. Thus it must be in Windows XP Pro, SP2.
Where in Windows is the hole?

I got a problem similar, several times, and I called my ISP. In one case,
they turned off my line in error. In another case, they helped me recyle my
modem, as I had a battey backup, and couln't yank out the battery. When I was
doing this, they can see from their end if the line is connected OK to the
cable modem, and they were able to watch me connect on their system.

Recently, I thought I had some problem with my router, recyled the router,
while calling the ISP thinking it was a line problem. They told me I just
recycled the router, two minutes before, and signals should be coming through
in a minute. It did.

What I'm saying is the ISP could be of some help here, and since the call is
free, for me at least, you lose nothing giving it a try.
