no network or internet access

My computer suddenly stopped accessing both our home network and, when I
hooked it up straight to our cable modem, the Internet. I reinstalled IE6,
ran virus scans, repaired the winsock and still nothing. I'm online through
the network on an ancient laptop so I know the hardware and modem work. Any
suggestions? Is it possible that the networking card could suddely die?
