No music on the first slide of presentation

I have a 383 slide presentation with music changing at 9 different times.
WHen "Pack & Go" the presentation and then re-open it on my computer or
another one, music on the first slide will not play. Music plays on the
other slides. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

What version of PPT?
Is first audio file located in the same folder as the presentation?

What type of music file did you insert on the first slide? Was it a WAV or MP3
or other? If it's NOT a WAV, do you see the file in the folder that contains
the unpacked files? Did it play when you created the presentation? What are
the Custom Animation settings for the music file?

I use PowerPoint 2002 from XP. All music is in the same folder as the
slides. I noticed the music does not play on a couple of slides, but plays

STOP PLAYING AFTER 32 SLIDES, Sonia,

It is an MP3 file. It is in the folder with the unpacked presentation and
with the other songs, some of which are MP3 and others a Windows Media audio
file. It played and still plays, as it always has, on my computer. It is
when I packed or copied it on a CD to play on another computer, that it
stopped working. The Custom Animation Settings are: START WITH PREVIOUS,
START PLAYING FROM BEGINNING. This are the setting I customized.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Is the file on the CD?

On the system where it doesn't start, go to Start > Run and type mplay32.exe and
click OK. Then open the file and click on the play icon. Does it play in
mplay32.exe on that system?

Note: If the system is running Windows 98 or ME, type mplayer.exe instead of
mplay32.exe.

Sonia,

I packed the file to my desktop and transferred it to a computer running
Wondows 2000 and it did not work. I then unpacked the file that was on my
desktop to determine if it would run on my system, and it would not. Of the
9 different pieces of mucis in the presentation, only the 1st and 3rd ones
will not play.

What about the questions? Are the music files on the Win 2000 system? Do they
play in mplay32.exe?

The files were copied to the Windows 2000 system. I was able to play the
music files on the 2000 system through a media player, not through using them
in the PowerPoint presentation. I cannot answer your specific mplay32.exe
question until later in the week as I am not with the 2000 machine for a few
days.

Please note: if I take the presentation which is working fine on my XP
machine and "pack" it, then "Unpack" it on my XP machine and run the
presentation, the same problem occirs--the first and third music files will
not play, but the pther 7 will.

Hope this information helps you determine the problem.

Thanks so much.

Do you get any messages from Pack and Go that it can't locate two of your files?
If you move the files to a folder, but you don't change the link, the Viewer and
PowerPoint won't be able to locate them. It sounds to me as if your links are
breaking. Read the following to understand more about what happens to links
when you move a presentation. You may need to delete the sound files and add
them back into the presentation to correct the links.

Sounds/Movies don't play, images disappear or links break when I move or email a
presentation
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00155.htm

PowerPoint hands off all media files to Windows which uses mplay32.exe to play
them. The fact that they play in "other" players is not significant. If they
don't play in mplay32.exe they won't play in PowerPoint.

Sonia,

Thanks for your help. I will move the presentation and music to a single
folder, reinsert the music links, and try to pack and unpack it again.

Also make sure that the length of the total path of the files does not exceed
128 characters.

Sonia,

I am not sure what you mean by the total path of the file to not exceed 128
characters.

I copied the audio files and PowerPoint presentation to a new folder on my
desktop, then deleted all 9 music links, reinserted the 9 links from the
folder on my desk top. When I ran the PowerPoint presentation with the music
newly attached, every other one of the 9 files played. I do not know what I
am doing wrong.

Any chance I can call you Thursday and see if the problem can be determined?

I appreciate all the time oyu are takikng to try to solve my problem.

Thank you.

The full path to a file is, for example:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat 6.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe. If you have
folders within folders that are within folders and your file names are long,
your path can quickly exceed 128 characters. Every space, slash and period
counts as a character.

Sonia,

The path for one of the audio files that will not work when I copy the
presentation and audio files to a new folder and reinsert the audio file is
78 characters. So I do not think the problem is the length of the path.

Unless you have another suggestion, or a service I can call, I will try a
porgram other than PowerPoint. I feel I am at a dead end.

Thanks.

Although this newsgroup is hosted by Microsoft, we are all just users like you.

My suggestion is that you abandon Pack and Go. If you have all of your files in
a single folder, I'm not sure what Pack and Go offers you. If you need to
include the Viewer, you can do that manually. Try just moving the folder to the
other system and test the presentation.

I was thinking of another thread when I wrote that. I don't think that our
product will help you. Sorry for the confusion.

I guess I should mention that I have a product that does this automatically and
corrects your links if they are not relative. If you're interested, see

Sonia,

I have another question. When I insert a particular song PowerPoint says:
PowerPoint couldn't insert a sound from the selected file. I can play the
song without a problem on my computer. Please help.

Thanks.
