No Mouse in the House

I have two mouses, an MS Wireless Wheel Mouse (optical), that has a
transmitter/receiver that plugs into the USB port; and I have a regular
two-button mouse that plugs into the PS/2 round port next to the
keyboard. Neither mouse will work.
Normally I use the MS Wireless, but even if I attach the old regular
one, I can't get that to work either. I don't know what precipitated the
problem because someone else was using the machine.

Control Panel > Mouse > Open > Properties > Hardware Tab > I have
nothing listed.

If I use the Add Hardware Wizard > Yes I have already connected the
device > Search for and Install New Device > It doesn't find anything >
I take the option "if you know hardware model click next" > I don't see
anything that looks like the mouse > Show all devices > I don't know
which one to add, if there is one to add.

Otherwise the machine seems to be working okay.

What's the next step to get a mouse going?
