No Mixer Device Available

I could not adjust the volume on this Windows 2000 notebook so I went to
Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment and Volume Control. I get the
error message:
"There are no mixer device available. You may install mixer devices from
the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard in the Control Panel."

Where would this be? I don't see anything specific to "mixer devices".
Thanks

Sound card driver has crashed , go into Device manager and remove all
related to Sound devices, reboot and let windows reinstall them
It may ask for your 98 CD so keep it handy.
